Thacher Island, the Cape Ann Light Station (Thacher Island Twin Lights)

Thacher Island is open to the public from mid-June until mid September. It can be reached via the Thacher Island launch which runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Call 617-599-2590 for reservations. The island has 3 miles of groomed walking trails, a visitor center and museum, you can climb the north tower, visit the fog signal building and the principal keeper’s house or use the campground. Call the keeper for moorings and campground reservations at 508-284-0144 after June 1st. The island is maintained as a wildlife refuge pets are not allowed. Guest moorings are available and kayakers are welcome. The island is a National Historic Landmark one of fewer than 3000 in the nation.

Driving Directions

The island is about one mile off the coast of Rockport, about two miles from Gloucester Harbor, and about 30 miles north of Boston. The south tower and southeastern portion of the island (approximately 28 acres) was deeded to the Town of Rockport by the U.S. Coast Guard, which maintains the solar-powered optic. The north tower and northern end of the island (approximately 22 acres) is owned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and managed by the Town of Rockport as a wildlife refuge. Thacher Island is accessible by boat, kayak or the Thacher Island launch. Call 617-599-2590 for launch reservations.
