A lovely stretch of coastline on Massachusetts’ North Shore is home to many charming ice cream shops that are always an ideal stop on a warm day. Many have distinct tales to tell, from generation-old family businesses to modern creameries that provide creative takes on traditional flavors. Any ice cream fan should check out the shops along the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway, whether they are from the area or just passing through. Here are some of our best recommendations for you to try.

Captain Dusty’s

Captain Dusty’s Ice Cream in Beverly is a great spot near the waterfront and down the road from Endicott College. There is another location in Manchester by the Sea on the water. Captain Dusty’s has a large selection of flavors as well as a variety of other snacks and refreshments, including souvenirs and gifts. Holy Cow Ice Cream Cafe

Holy Cow Ice Cream has two dedicated cafes along the Coastal Byway. They have plenty of amazing reviews and back them up with their amazing flavors and service. They recently took home the 2022 North American Ice Cream Association Flavor of the Year with its Ritzy AF salted butter cracker ice cream. Down River Ice Cream

Down River, located along the Castle Neck River, is an excellent spot to relax after a long day. This family-owned and operated business has been serving up delicious ice cream treats for over 15 years and has become a beloved local institution. It is the perfect spot when leaving Crane Beach in the summer.

Hodgies Too

Located in Salisbury and Newburyport, Hodgies Too is a little, family-run, seasonal ice cream stand. It first debuted in Salisbury in 1992.
